A popular legend has it that in 1908 an American tea importer, Thomas Sullivan, tried to cut costs by sending loose tea in silk sacks instead of the regular tin packaging. His customers were confused by the new packaging and assumed that the bag had to be placed in the hot water. However, seven years earlier, Roberta C. Lawson and Mary Molaren of Milwaukee filed for a patent for a “tea leaf holder” that also resembles what we use today. Whether it was Sullivan's packaging mistake or the patent registered seven years earlier, it doesn’t really matter who invented the teabag first, what matters is that it   led to becoming a modern convenience to single serving tea-brewing.
